The History of the Birth of Pancasila in Indonesia

The forerunner of the birth of Pancasila began with the promise of Independence from Japan to Indonesia. At that time, Kuniaki Koiso, who was the Prime Minister of Japan, formed the Investigating Agency for Efforts to Prepare for Indonesian Independence (BPUPKI) on September 7, 1994. BPUPKI or Dokuritsu Junbi Cosakai was formed with the aim of studying and investigating all matters related to the establishment of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).

Initially, BPUPKI had around 70 members consisting of 8 people from Japan who served as supervisors and 62 Indonesian representatives. At the 2nd session members plus 6 people from Indonesia where previously the first session was held on May 29 – June 1, 1945. The first session of BPUPKI aims to formulate the philosophy of the Indonesian state. During the 4 days of the trial time, Ir. Soekarno, Moh. Hatta, Soepomo, K.H. Abdul Wachid Hasyim and Mohammad Yamin formulated five principles for Indonesia.

In an effort to formulate Pancasila as the official State Basis, of course, there are many personal proposals put forward by BPUPKI members, one of which is Muhammad Yamin who spoke on May 29 on the first day of the session. Muhammad Yamin formulated five basics, namely:

  • Perikebangsaan
  • Humanity
  • Periketuhanan
  • Perikerakyatan
  • People’s Wellbeing

Muhammad Yamin stated that the five precepts he formulated were rooted in history, religion, civilization and constitutional life that had long developed in the country. It’s just that when it was Moh. Hatta doubted muhammad Yamin’s proposal.

Ir. Soekarno then proposed Pancasila which he put forward on the last day of the session, namely on June 1, 1945 in a short speech which is currently known as “The Birth of Pancasila”. In his speech, Ir. Soekarno mentioned the basics, namely:

  • Indonesian Nationality or Nationalism
  • Internationalism or Humanity
  • Consensus or Democracy
  • Social Welfare
  • The Almighty God

The name “Pancasila” has been mentioned by Ir. Soekarno in his short speech. Before the first session ended, a small committee was formed to reformulate Pancasila. Now from the small committee, 9 people known as the Committee of Nine were selected to carry out the task.

The plan was finally approved on June 22, 1945, which was later named the Jakarta Charter. After the formulation of Pancasila was officially accepted, of course, it could not be separated from several determination documents, namely:

  1. The first formulation was the Jakarta Charter on June 22, 1945.
  2. The Second Formulation was the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution on August 18, 1945. N
  3. The third formulation was the Preamble to the RIS (Republic of the United States of Indonesia) constitution on December 27, 1949.
  4. The Fourth Formulation was the Preamble to the Constitution (Provisional Constitution) on August 15, 1950.
  5. The Fifth Formulation is the first formulation that animates the 2nd formulation and is a series of unity with the constitution referring to the Presidential Decree of July 5, 1959.

Meanwhile,on August 7, 1945, Japan changed BPUPKI to PPKI (Preparatory Committee for Indonesian Independence) or Dokuritsu Junbi Inkai.  But long story short, Japan suffered defeat in World War II. On August 6 and August 9, the Western Allies known to be led by the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

This event immediately caused Japan to experience major problems and its influence and strength in Indonesia weakened. The weak power and power of Japan was used by Indonesian fighters to seize and proclaim Indonesian Independence which bore fruit on August 17, 1945.

The day after the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia, precisely on August 18, it was formulated and the Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia was enacted. In the preamble to the 1945 Constitution, it is stated that the basis of the Indonesian state is formed in an arrangement of the Republic of Indonesia which has the people’s interest based on:

  • Pancasila please first read: “The God of the Almighty”
